Leominster High School and the Center for Technology Education

In the 2005-2006 school year, Leominster High School had an enrollment of 1,197 students, in grades 9 through12. The Center for Technology Education had a population of 666 students in grades 9 through12. Ninety students actively participated in the JFYNet Academic Support Program during the school year with another 214 making some occasional use. The students were sophomores taking geometry as their math class and they represented students from both the newly reorganized LHS and CTE. The program focused on using JFYNet’s MCAS Express program for math.

Students participated in the JFYNet program primarily during the spring and shared one new lab. Class size was generally 20 to 25 students and there were minimal technical issues. At times, access to the lab was limited and involved teachers having to sign-up for time well in advance. However, several teachers showed great interest in making the most of the program; this included teachers that were comfortable using technology, and one that was hesitant. The supplemental MCAS Express materials were also received well and shared with all math staff. U.S Congressman John Olver paid LHS a visit during the year. A former chemistry professor, Rep. Olver noted the atmosphere of fun in the math class. "These students are much more likely to go into science if they have found math enjoyable, and if they have done well in mathematics. This program has the right idea, and I'm very glad to see Leominster High in the vanguard of technology use," he commented. "It's what Massachusetts needs to do more of to retain our competitive position."
