Freedom House
Freedom House has been an active part of the Dorchester/Roxbury community since the organization was founded in 1949 by two social workers, Otto and Muriel Snowden. Over 50 years later, Freedom House still serves different populations with programs in academic enrichment, technology education and civic participation. JFYNet has been working with Freedom House for two years as a partner in the Just-Us Youth program.
The JUY population ranges from 5th through 8th grades and represents young people that attend a variety of schools in the greater Dorchester/Roxbury area and METCO. They are supervised by the education coordinator and a group of volunteer interns from Northeastern. In the 2005-2006 school year, JFYNet trained volunteers on how to use a combination of the appropriate MCAS Express Math alignments and one of two middle school English alignments. The goal was to have students work on the computer 3 days a week with the volunteers and/or the JFYNet Site Coordinator. Freedom House also piloted the Choices program. Students worked on Academic and Career skills. All students in the Choices program were successful in receiving summer internships. To recognize the efforts of Freedom House JFYNetWorks awarded Freedom House the JFYNet Achievement Award in May 2006.
