2006-2007
William H. Galvin Middle School serves 6-8 grades and its enrollment for the 2006-07 school year was 737. The student population was 14.9% SPED and 79.4% white (9.8% African American). There were 55 teachers and 100% of core teachers were Highly Qualified. GMS hired a new SPED teacher who turned out to be a very effective user of the JFYNet program. While she had the advantage of having computers right in her classroom, this teacher’s effectiveness was in her excellent instruction and understanding of how to incorporate the JFYNet tools into her curriculum and differentiate instruction with her students. On days that she would use the PLATO software, she started class with a lesson or a brief review and this made the material timely and relevant to students. For content that she found to be difficult for her students and/or required visuals, she would project the PLATO tutorial onto a screen and use it as whole group instruction. Students would then complete the mastery test independently. These strategies contributed to a very successful implementation at GMS. She worked with approximately 70 students, each averaging almost 9 hours on PLATO. Other teachers who used PLATO did so with far less regularity. As a result, the GMS made AYP for the first time in two years.
